Procrastination

Post by Evie on Tue May 17, 2016 5:00 am

Thought this was a fantastic talk.

Do you procrastinate? Is the monkey-brain active? Smile
Mine is......but I'll report back on being better Wink

Notes on the talk:

1. Amygdala is activated by stress
You freeze and your brain shuts down, so that you respond to fear
Procrastination is often activated by mild fear response

Monkey mind: Reacts to threatening stimulus of the task, for example when it's -

- Overwhelming
- Complex
and/or
- Unpleasant

And perfectionists can handicap themselves by being afraid of personal failure to live up to their own high standards. (Which reminds me of the quote - "Production over perfection!")

2. How to overcome monkey mind procrastination

- Metacognition - thinking about thinking
We won't be making the decision to study - we'll have a monkey mind in the way making the decision to not do it because we're too lazy to contradict that thought.
Recognise this and become aware of the inner monkey

- Plan goals
Split the task into smaller parts

- Plan time
Set realistic timeframe

- Prepare resources
Get all your resources prepared before you start working so that you can't make the excuse that you then need something on Google etc. to get the task done

- Visualise having the task done
If you visualise that you've already done the task, actually doing it will be easier

How do you conquer procrastination?

'As an experiment, think of one thing that you should organize in your life. Write it down. Then write down when you can do it and what you need to get it done. If you can get it done right now, then go do it!'

Re: Procrastination

Well, this morning I procrastinated badly for the first time in ages...   and I feel horrible. It's interesting because I was reading recently about how guilt can affect your self-esteem. I haven't had any really noticeable procrastination guilt recently, because I hadn't really procrastinated in a noticeable way until now, but it's definitely making me feel more awful than I was feeling already. Sad

https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/dont-delay/201302/what-guilt-teaches-us-about-procrastination

"More importantly for each of us daily is this lesson: the experience of guilt is a signal that we are falling short of our ought self, and that the solution lies in the exertion of self-control."

I'm definitely the internet researcher, snacker, and perpetuator. Sometimes I'm a napper, sidetracker, watcher, and gamer. Sadly, I'm not much of a social sharer. In the older days, I was a cleanor, panicker, and list-maker. Hot damn, who would have thought procrastination gave me so many skills, maybe I should add these on LinkedIn Wink

And in case LMS is reading, my Mom is a Virgo and my Dad is a Capricorn, both are obsessed with keeping things organized, especially my Mom who often feels the need to comment on the untidiness of my "office". The funny thing is I am much more productive when I am disorganized (or just not organized to her satisfaction). At least I'm not the cleanor anymore.

I am reading PR Wink Well Virgos are often really organized aren't they, so I wonder what's wrong with me haha. I am not known for my organizations skills of showing up on time. Not to mention my chaotic nature...

I am def a sidetracker, a cleaner (although when I do that I get sidetracked as well haha) The Internet researcher and the perpetuator.
