Humans subconsciously mimic other accents

Post by Evie on Sun Jun 19, 2016 5:24 pm

I find this so fascinating:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/7931299/Humans-subconsciously-mimic-other-accents-psychologists-claim.html

Very Happy

I know that when I had supervisory meetings with my Scottish associate supervisor during Honours, I used to start accidentally slipping into a Scottish accent... Embarassed

@Night Eyes: how do you do this? I don't really like the accent I have when I am speaking English - it's too harsh and I'd like to soften it

I am aware of the fact that I will never sound completely like a native, because there are lots of pronunciation patterns I don't know and bad habits I've developed in almost 8 years of studying English. Smile

Its probably because Bristol isnt that far from where i live so we hear the accent a lot and its very distinctive

i wouldnt worry about not sounding Native, the accent is different in different parts of the uk so as long as your speaking clearly you're doing a better job than some natives hehe

Thank you!

Well, I didn't care about my accent until I started to watch movies & TV series without subs to test my listening skills and study the way natives speak and then I realized I don't like my accent at all. It's not about what others think.

I just want to sound natural and less East European (I am not ashamed to be one, though).

well most Tv and films with English accents tend to be focused on London accents either posh or Cockney

i live in Wales so if you heard my accent its nothing like anything you would hear in tv's and films, and living in the uk i struggle to understand some accents so i really wouldnt worry about it too much, my brother lives in Southampton which is the bottom of England and they have a lovely soft gentle and clear accent

drm0, you might like to check out Amy Walker - she does some great accent tip videos.

It really depends on what kind of English you're aiming at. A lot of Central/Eastern Europeans tend to sound slightly American when speaking English because their Rs are harder; I have cousins who sound more American than English, even though they learned from English tutors. So if you're looking to acquire the full American accent, it could be fairly easy.

As Night says, there are so many different types of accent in the English language - even if you're not thinking about global variations on it like American or Australian. For example, there's standard Estuary English...

...or the Yorkshire accent...

In the end, there are so many different accents in the English language that you're bound to find out you sound pretty awesome already. Very Happy

At the same time, of course you can still work on softening your accent if you wish. Smile
